Overview of Topologies

Why are there so many concepts? - Each of them shows advantages (Pro's) and disadvantages (Con's).

Given by both industrial and scientific users, the technical requirements for state-of-the-art power electronics devices, e.g. switch mode power supplies, vary widely with the target application they are designed for. The application's demands however may only be covered to its best if the chosen circuit concept provides the best compromise between making maximum use of the Pro's and avoiding the Con's.

A wide knowledge and much experience is necessary to evaluate and chose the optimum topology for each of your applications.

A detailed concept study at least consist of the following design criteria:

  • evaluation of the basic electronic functions and features
  • applicable safety and EMI standards
  • efficiency and thermal management
  • mechanical design constraints
  • risk and failure management
  • life time calculations
  • R&D time and cost planning
  • target price
  • project management
